Cancer Prevention and Control

The overall goals of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program are to harness the intellectual capacity at UChicago to determine the genetic, psychological, behavioral, and socioenvironmental basis of cancer, and to disseminate cancer control efforts through research in our local community. The majority of Program 6 members are focused on health disparities research.
The scientific goals of the programs are to:
- Elucidate the genetic and environmental basis, as well as the mechanisms of progression, for common cancers (breast, ovarian, colorectal, prostate, lung, skin, and blood), and to translate this new knowledge into clinical and public health practice;
- Develop animal models for chemoprevention studies and identify biomarkers for early detection of cancer;
- Identify genetic, environmental, psychological, and biobehavioral basis of cancer risk and prevention; and
- Solidify an organized outreach research effort in the South Side Chicago neighborhoods to enhance participation and utilization of UChicago research, education, and clinical services, thereby reducing the disparities in cancer and other health outcomes and their modifiable determinants in the community.
In addition to molecular, biobehavioral, and clinical research, the program has expanded its research strengths to include epidemiology and environmental health and genetics.
